VIDEO SUMMARY

Has this ever happened to you? You are working with an Excel spreadsheet and the numbers get too wide to fit in the cell. So you end up with number signs. This happens all the time if you are working with spreadsheets in accounting. So what you need to do is widen the column until all the number fit.

The typical way you would do this, is to grab the top of the column and drag. An easier way, is you can actually double click on the edge of the column and it will auto-size for you.

But I am going to give you an even easier way by using a keyboard shortcut. Excel makes this very easy. You can get to any button on the ribbon, using a shortcut. All you need to do is start with pressing “Alt”.

When you press “Alt” you will notice a series of letters show up at the top of your window. This is telling you what key to press next in sequence depending on what tab of the ribbon you want. We are going to press “H” for Home. Then the next series of letters show up depending on where you want to go. And you can keep pressing letters until you get to the command you want.

In our case, we want to autofit the column width to the numbers. Normally, this is in a drop down menu at the top of the ribbon, that takes a couple of mouse clicks to get to. With the correct cell selected, you can just use the shortcut “Alt + H O I” . It is super easy to remember. It is also easy to press because all the letters are very close together.

So whenever you get these numbers on your spreadsheet. Just put the cursor in the cell, and press Alt + H O I and it will automatically resize the column to the correct width.

Over all the years I have used Excel, this has saved me so much time and mouse clicks I can’t even count. I hope you find this helpful. Go out and have fun on your Excel projects.
