Accounting is a Calling
Here is a different perspective on accounting as a career!
VIDEO SUMMARY
When I was growing up, I did not know what an accountant was. Most kids do not grow up thinking they want to be an accountant. So for me, it was not until I was working in corporate America where I saw accountants at work, that I understood what an accountant did. When I saw that, I knew that was the right job for me. That is an interesting realization, because accounting is a difficult job. It is a challenging career, and it is difficult to become an accountant. But for the right person, that is a challenge you want to accept. So I want to share with you this idea that accounting is a calling. There will be something about your skillset, background, or mindset that calls you into service to do this work.
Let us talk about how this plays out in life. One of my favorite things to do, is hang out with fellow accountants. It is always enjoyable to have friends who are like-minded people. People who think the same way and have the same kind of background and training. So when I get together with my accounting friends, one of the things that inevitably comes up in conversation is our very detailed five-year financial plans for our personal lives. I have been surprised to find that all accountants have them. If you think about it, this is very strange behavior. Most people have no financial plan. So the fact that this group of accountants enjoys creating financial plans, is one reason why accounting is an attractive career for them.
Let us talk about another example. Try to remember the last time you went out to eat with a large group of people. Let us say five different people. So you sit down, have dinner, and have a great time. Then at the end of the dinner, the check comes. And this is always a challenging moment, because someone has to calculate the tip, and also figure out how to divide it among the people paying. Now if this moment comes, and everyone at the table turns to you for your advice on how to perform this task, that might be a sign you would be a good accountant. That is a moment where people are recognizing you have some skill in this area.
Here are some more examples. If you are the type of person who spends their free time reading books on money or learning about money, you might be a good accountant. If you watch this YouTube channel, you might be a good accountant. If you care a lot about ethics and doing the right thing, you might be a good accountant. If you are a very organized person, you might be a good accountant. If you are the type of person who is willing to put in long hours when you are working on a project, you might be a good accountant. If people look to you as a responsible, trustworthy person, you might be a good accountant.
My point is this. Accountants are a special type of person. And I am not talking about myself. I am talking about all the incredible accountants I have met, and worked with, and are friends with. And a lot of times accountants do not get very much recognition. It is not a career like being a sports athlete or a celebrity. There are no award shows for accountants. But what accountants do is just as important. These are people who have dedicated their lives to managing money. And it is a sacred thing that society has trusted accountants with this responsibility. Just look around you at the world today. The world is full of complex problems, and the world needs people who are good with money to help solve these problems. The world needs more good accountants.
I know people do not normally talk about accounting in these terms. But this is an idea I want to leave you with. Accounting is a calling. If you find you have an interest in financial topics, or you really enjoy dealing with money, you need to realize that is something very special. It might just be your subconscious mind trying to tell you something. You may be getting called to work in this great profession of accounting.
