Workouts for Accountants

This week we talk about Fitness! Watch now…

VIDEO SUMMARY

We are talking about fitness. Accountants do not usually tell you about this, but if you are working in accounting or corporate finance, fitness is critical to your career. If you want to become a business leader in your organization, those jobs are very physically demanding. For example, if you are not healthy, you will not be able to handle the job of CEO of a big company. You just could not do the job. In fact, if you start reading bios for CEOs of major corporations, most of them have really intense workout habits. When you start breaking down the typical day of a CEO, you start to understand why. You are doing things like keeping up your energy for long hours, intense negotiations, high stress situations, and racing through airports. Your body has to be able to keep up.

The problem is that no one is telling you what you should be doing about your fitness. There are many fitness experts on YouTube, but if you are an accountant, a lot of what they say does not really apply to your situation. You are not going to be able to spend four hours a day in the gym. It is just not going to happen. You are in luck, because today we are going to talk specifically about workouts for accountants.

The concept you need to understand is accounting is dangerous. It is important that you understand the physical dangers you face as an accountant. The typical accountant performs:

  • Sitting for long hours
  • Computer work
  • High stress
  • Repetitive Motion

If you go to any doctor, give them this list, they will tell you that you have a very high risk for the following health problems:

  • Heart attack
  • Back pain
  • Obesity
  • Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

These are all difficult health conditions that can devastate your life. I have personally seen accountants struggle with all these things. You want to avoid them at all costs. My suggestion today is that you design your workouts around combatting these dangers that are very real in your life.

I will tell you what I do.

  • I work out every single day, seven days a week.
  • Sometimes I work out twice a day (before and after work).
  • I keep my workouts short (20-30 minutes).
  • On hard days, I lift weights at the gym (three to four days a week).
  • Half of the workouts are easy (walking three miles).

The point of this approach is that every single day you are doing something active. Your goal is not to get massive muscles. Your goal is to stay healthy. The problem that most people have is they sit in front of their computer all day, and then they come home and sit on their couch. That is so devastating on your body. My main point is after work DO NOT go back to sitting, but instead do something active and get your blood circulating. It can be as simple as going for a walk. I realize you may be tired, and do not feel like it. Force yourself to get out there and be active. You have to remember that your health and your career depends on it.

I feel lucky because I like going to the gym. For me it is a hobby. Since my job is so intellectual, it is nice to do something that is purely physical. But I realize that not everybody likes the gym. But that is okay. There are many different options to be active. You could ride bikes. You could play a sport. You could play with your kids. The most important thing is to find activity you can do every day. I would plan it out, and stick with it.

Your health is one area that affects everything else in your life. If you can start making fitness a priority when you are young, it will pay dividends for the rest of your life.
